Dorothy Parker is my number one fantasy cocktail party guest of all time bar none.
A truly American artist who’s main theme came from The American Declaration of Independence itself: The Pursuit Of Happiness (and all of its consequences).
Not only was she a poet, original staff member of The New Yorker and an Oscar winning scriptwriter, Parker also managed to originate countless phrases that have embedded themselves deep into the culture to this day.
“Boy meets girl”, “Face lift”, “High Society”, “One night stand”, “With bells on”, “Pain in the neck” and “What the hell?” (now shortened to “WTF”). These and many others were all hers.
She gave voice to the first generation of women who chose to live alone without a husband or children. She pondered what it was to have power over men and also what it was to be powerless in their presence.
An unfortunate coincidence indeed.
